General information about council tax

Council Tax is a form of local taxation that helps pay for the services provided by the Council. These services cover such things as education, social services for the elderly and disabled, planning, roads footpaths and street lighting, libraries, leisure facilities and environmental services such as refuse collection.

We also collect money on behalf of the Tyne & Wear Fire and Civil Defence Authority, the Northumbria Police Authority and the Lamesley Parish Council. The amount that is included in your Council Tax bill for these bodies is shown on the front of your bill with further details in the explanatory leaflet enclosed with your bill.

The explanatory leaflet gives details of the budgets for the Council and the other bodies.

If you have any queries or would like further information on town or parish council budgets then you need to contact them direct.

If you would like a further copy of any of the leaflets then please write, including details of which leaflet you require, to:

The total budget for 2005/2006 for Gateshead Council is £259 million pounds. Council Tax has increased by 4.37% on last year. This increase is the equivalent of £1.14 per week for a band D property

The increase has been kept as small as possible whilst making sure that we have enough money to continue providing the quality services at a level that remains good value for money. It also allows us to maintain the momentum of continuously improving our core services to all of our residents.

If this is the first bill you have received from us this year, you will find more details about the increase and the Council's budget for April 2006 to March 2007 in the leaflet that came with your bill.
